A comparison of Eastern Armenian and Iron Ossetic spatial systems

Abstract

In this paper, we compare the spatial systems of Eastern Armenian and Iron Ossetic in order to assess the hypothesis of a common Caucasian influence on the two. We show that, while the broad typological profile of the two is similar, they have substantial differences in the treatment of individual spatial relations. As spatial systems of this type are very common, especially in Northern Eurasia, most similarities between the languages can be explained without appeal to areal convergence.
